Moving to Guam was a daunting task but as long as you plan ahead and start preparing as early as possible you will be fine! They speak English here so you won't have to learn another language many people here also speak Chamoru or Japanese so you find yourself picking up some common words and mixing them with English. Hafa Adai is hello (greeting) and Si Yu'us Ma'ase is thank you and Adios is goodbye. There are lots of different cultures here as tourism is the main money maker so lots of Japanese or other asian tourists are always walking around Tumon the main hotel beach and shopping area.

The temperature here is always around the upper 80's and 100% humidity so if you have curly hair prepare for the frizz! Lots of people have allergy/sinus problems here as the constant pressure changes wreck havoc on your sinuses. It rains pretty much everyday here whether it is rainy season or not. We can get typhoons here which are this regions version of hurricanes and they can be severe although major ones are rare. The houses are concrete with storm shutters so you just take cover in your house till its over. Generators are helpful to have but rarely get used. We do have occasional power outages or brown outs but they never last long and that's on and off base. It is good to have a typhoon emergency kit with food and water/supplies just in case a major storm hits us. We get earthquakes often but you won't always feel them and they don't usually disrupt too much. The sun here is very strong and you can get burned very quickly here so sunscreen is an absolute must! The ocean is beautiful here as are the jungles. The current is strong here and there is a lot of coral close to shore so you ha e to be careful where you swim. If you participate in water activities or like hiking you will love it here!

If you have animals start the process really early as Guam has strict requirements so make sure you work closely with your vet Guam Department of Agriculture and the Andersen Pet Lodge if Air a force or Harper Valley if Navy. There aren't many pet friendly towels here so it's best to keep them at the kennel until you get a house and is cheaper as hotels charge way more in deposits and daily fees to have them with you. Nice hotels include the PIC (north tower) Westin Hilton or Sheraton. We stayed at the Royal Orchid which was very dirty and had tons of mold. They have the USO which was the only good thing about it.

You definitely will need a rental car here because outside of Tumon there is not a reliable public transit system. If you can get lodging on base you are very lucky! I wouldn't recommend renting a car from the place on AAFB as the cheapest was $55/day. We rented off base from Blake's for close to $25/day I heard Payless and the place on Navy aren't too bad either. Cars take quite awhile to get to Guam we shipped ours early from New Jersey and took almost 2months to get here. Our furniture actually arrived pretty quickly we only needed the rental furniture from the base for a short time. If you are able to choose your moving company when you get here DO NOT USE PACIFIC MOVERS we know way too many people who used them and only got a partial shipment while the rest was "lost" and they had problems with them stealing! We had Dewitt and had no issues or damage except two squished bowls they were very nice and set up our whole house.

It takes a long time for mail to get here especially packages but you can save money using usps flat rate boxes. All packages require customs forms. Most places have mail delivery but those who don't have mail delivery get APO boxes on base. Everyone on base has PO Boxes. Companies don't always ship to Guam only APO's or only street addresses so sometimes you have to ship items to family and have them forward it to you. Finding things on island is hard as well so you end up doing a lot of online shopping especially for baby/kid items home decor clothes car parts movies/music maternity items formal wear etc.

Phones from the US won't work here unless you unlock/jailbreak them to use them with a local cell company here like IT&E GTA Docomo. Trying to call family in the States is not easy and can be expensive as many companies charge extra as they are international calls and the time difference is insane as we are a day ahead like 17hours ahead of the west coast. Skype or Facetime and free texting apps on your phone will save you lots of money talking to family in the states.

Cars are expensive here even used crappy ones "Boonie cars". Finding one that's $2k or less is very rare as people will charge a lot more for a car that barely runs because they know they can. If you are lucky you can pick up a decent one for around $5k if someone is PCSing. Roads are pretty rough here so be prepared for flat tires or nails in your tires. When it rains the roads are very slick too even with the low speed limit of 35mph island wide you still slide on the road so being a defensive driver is a must to combat weather and the crazy local drivers here.

The NEX has the best shopping on a base here and really nice furniture! There are wild dogs running around you see all the time and lots of bugs mainly spiders ants and Mosquitos. We do have brown snakes here and they always make a big deal about how many there are but you almost never see them unless you live close to the jungle. We do have birds here although people will tell you there aren't any. On base you see deer and hogs too! Off base I've seen people riding carabao as well which are pretty much big cows if you see one on a hike though leave it alone as my husband was chased by one. :) there are coconut crabs too that are freakin huge but they also are rare to see and try to avoid people.

Guam is an interesting place to live but you make the best of it and definitely hop when you can! Get a paid passport before you get here as it is a pain in the butt to get one here you can't use the free government passports for travel here only for when you PCS to or from here with accompanying orders. You live on a tropical island and experience a unique culture here so enjoy it while you can!

Hi

My husband and I will be moving our family to Guam in 2012...  I was just wondering if someone can tell me the number of pets you are allowed to have on base???  Also I am excited but scared all at the same time b/c of the weather there...  It is horrible??? (as far as storms go???)  I am a HUGE chicken...  And what is the native language???  I feel I should learn to at least speak the basics b/c it could prove helpful...  If anyone has any advise please feel free to give it... lol  I have never been outside of the states so this is COMPLETELY new and as you all can imagine or even know it can be frightening...

Thanks Geneva

Good to know:

+prices in stores include VAT (tax). If it says $4.99 it costs $4.99 (like in Europe :-)

+Homes are built to be typhoon resistant and can handle the weather.

+It is recommended that you bring a generator with you.

+Guam does not recognize nor accept motorcycle licenses not issued by the Guam Department of Motor Vehicles you'll have to re-test. Just a heads up.

+ Since it's a Joint base here is individual base info: NBG homepage http://www.andersen.af.mil/

Kelly says about Guam:

Whether you are heading to Guam -courtesy of the military- or you are just curious about this assignment this extensive post by Kelly on tle="joint-region-marianas-guam/housing/" href="bases/joint-region-marianas-guam/housing/">militarydutystations.com leaves almost no questions unanswered.

The Island

There are pluses and minutes about Guam. One must keep an open mind coming here because the culture and way of life are different and the island is small and I am not going to lie it can be monotonous at times but if you are easy to adapt as most military and their families are then it shouldn’t be a problem. The locals are called Chamorros and if you are lucky enough to befriend some you will be entertained by some great bbq’s…be sure to get some of the recipes for their red rice etc. “Boonie” is a nickname used quite frequently for things related to the island. Boonie car (old car bought on the island) boonie stomping (hiking) Boonie dog or cat (strays and there are a lot of them). The island is only 30 miles long and has a lot of wonderful outdoors activities such a hiking (boonie stomping) snorkeling diving etc. The water is absolutely amazing. The base is nice and had all kinds of amenities a vet movie theater bowling alley restaurants fast foods places a library commissary NEX mini markets car wash swimming pool gym boating piers for fishing dive shops and a lot of historical landmarks if you love history so bring those cameras!

I would highly recommend making use of the base FFSC which has wonderful programs for military and their families. This is especially the case for spouses who are in search of employment. It can be pretty difficult to find a job on island but with a lot of persistence and utilizing your resources such as the FFSC’s FERP Program and MSP you may be able to get lucky.

Shopping

The commissary has periodic case lots sales in a large warehouse on base. These are great opportunities to buy in bulk at a great price. While we are on the shopping topic there are couple things to remember for those who are shopaholics. The shopping can be scarce or expensive on island unless you are into designer everything (there are a few designer malls in Tumon the tourist city in Guam). There is a Kmart on island but I am not going to lie it is a rip-off. They hike the prices up about three times as much as the states. If you like thrifty shopping I would hit up GPO (Guam Premier Outlets). They have a few decent stores there especially Ross…although beware…it can get quite crowded. Things also sell out quite fast and take a long time to sometimes be restocked even in the NEX. My recommendation to anyone who has specific items that they favor stock up on A LOT of them before you move here and have family send them to you or find an online store that ship tot the island (some places don’t but they are getting better at this).

Living

The downsides utilities…cell phone and internet services tend to go up and down. There are also quite few power outages at times so make sure you have a lot of flashlights etc. Since the island is in Typhoon Alley they are always in some type of condition of readiness. If you live on base you will be warned way in advance when you can expect one. These typhoons can show up ant time of the year but the season is typically May through November. I bought a generator before I moved to Guam but they do sell them on island. I would price them out because they are not cheap. FFSC holds local typhoon prep. course which is very informative. Also stock up on lots of water not only for drinking but for washing and plumbing. The same good for non perishables such as canned foods etc. You can never be too careful!

***I do want to make a note about some of the movers there (locally). I had a bad experience with Pacific Island movers. They stole some of my items (I found out when I moved back to the mainland and received my stuff) so if you get stuck with these movers please be wary and maybe even request a new carrier.

Because Guam is pretty much restricted to the 30 miles my recommendations are to get into the outdoors photography or the island’s history. This is something precious you can take back to the mainland with you. Also if you have money for traveling Saipan Japan Hong Kong Singapore Bali and Australia are right there.

PASSPORT:
Your spouse’s current command will direct him/her on the steps but the spouse will need a free military passport which he or she will get at the current command. This can only be used enroute to/from your pcs duty station. If you would also like to travel to other countries for personal travel while stationed in Guam you will need to also buy a personal travel passport: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

PETS:
If you have pets and are moving to Guam get ready for the quarantine. Guam like Hawaii is a rabies free island. If you are moving there with pets you have to take heed to a lot of preplanning before departure. Here is a link for the completer details on the steps: https://www.cnic.navy.mil/navycni/groups/public/documents/document/cnicp_a148489.pdf
I moved with a cat and a dog when I went there and chose the five-day option and let me just say it was a very confusing costly and tedious process. These are our babies though and they are basically like real children. The link pretty much says it all but I had to make my own list and spreadsheet to keep me organized. I would start the planning right away and let your vet know because they could be really helpful with all this. Also they don’t advertise this but when I moved there a few years ago I did some research and found out you can get $250 per pet/max $500 from the Navy. It is not even a dent in what you may pay for the vet bills and airline but every penny helps. Just make sure you inquire because it seems like a big secret for obvious reasons. :-)

We used Harper Valley because I kept getting confusing info from the AF base but I would try the AF base first anyways because it may be cheaper. With Harper Valley my babies were in a five-day program but were realized the morning after they arrived. It wasn’t the cleanest place from what I briefly saw but my babies were okay and cleared fast.

When you live on base (Navy) make sure you register your pets with the on base clinic. It is MUCH cheaper to take you pets here than outside base. They are not open on weekends so if heaven forbid there is an emergency you are forced to take them to a civilian vet. I have been to Wise Owl and I DON’T recommend them (long story) but I did like Isla Vet Clinic. They have really nice staff!
